I grew up in South Korea until I moved to New Jersey at 13 with my aunt. To fulfill my American dream, my English skills and adaptability were tested. I needed to survive. As a result, the experience helped me to talk effortlessly to strangers. Also, my passion for English and soccer paid itself along the journey by winning a Spelling Bee in middle school and a New Jersey state champions cup.

Finishing my first year in high school in New Jersey, my parents and I decided to unite again after being separated for over four years. So, following in my grandfather’s footsteps, who is a first-generation descendant in Vancouver, my High School graduation was held at Centennial Secondary in 2020.

What inspired me the most to become a journalist was Kim Hyun-woo, who is a South Korean journalist. He is the SBS (one of the three largest national television networks) reporter and SBS Eight O’clock News’s main weekday anchor. Lastly, he was considered the youngest main news anchor among South Korean terrestrial broadcasters. My favourite quote from Kim that wakes me up to study every day is, “no matter the occasion, journalism must be based on truth, be just, and accurate to gain the viewer’s trust.”

Moving forward, I will team up with the BCIT Link magazine and produce a podcast based on my learning experiences and stories yet to be told. My graduation date from BCIT Broadcast and Online Journalism is 2024.
